Alex De Silva

Alex was called and admitted to the English Bar as a Barrister, Middle Temple in 1991, the Malaysian Bar in 1993 and the Singapore Bar in 2001.

Alex worked in England for a year before returning home to begin his legal career. He spent his early years in legal practice as a junior to the former Chief Justice, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi at Rashid & Lee, assisting with landmark constitutional and administrative law cases.

At his next post at Skrine & Co. Alex worked closely with Mr. Tommy Thomas, the current Attorney General, in mainly corporate, company and shareholder related disputes.

Alex became a partner in a few firms before he ventured out to start his own law firm “De Silva” in 2004, which in 2009, merged with Bodipalar Ponnudurai Nathan to form BPD.

Alex is well known amongst legal circles as a tenacious litigator who never quits. His range of clients includes people from all walks of life, to public and private entities including large corporations and trade unions. Other lawyers have sought him out as Lead Counsel in appeal cases. Alex has appeared in the Industrial Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.

In a legal career spanning a quarter of a century, Alex has amassed extensive experience and expertise over many areas of civil litigation including corporate/company/shareholder disputes, defamation, commercial, banking, constitutional, administrative, industrial and trade union law. Many of the cases he has argued and won have resulted in landmark developments in Malaysian law and have been reported in law journals.

Apart from intense courtroom battles, Alex is also engaged in advisory and arbitration work. His advisory portfolio includes company/shareholder and contractual disputes. Alex is a qualified mediator, and is a listed mediator with the Malaysian Mediation Centre under the auspices of the Bar Council. Alex has appeared in numerous arbitrations involving mainly commercial/contractual disputes. He also possesses a Certificate for Sports Arbitration from the Asian International Arbitration Centre.

Alex is committed to assisting the Bar Council to improve the standards and proficiency of its members in litigation. He spends a few weekends every year imparting his litigation expertise to lawyers in the Bar Council's Advocacy Training Course. He has also trained in the Advanced Training Course in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Away from the firm and the courtroom, Alex enjoys playing cricket and golf. He has been active in cricket administration for many years and is the President of the Kuala Lumpur Cricket Association. He was also a past President of the Royal Selangor Club.

Amongst his inner circle of family and friends, Alex is known for his culinary skills, with a reputation for churning out a mean crab curry, crispy siew yoke and simply yummy lasagne. He looks forward to the day when BPD is the first law firm with an in house café offering delectable cuisine to go with astute legal advice.
